The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that its investigation into Ms. Aisha Achimugu is entirely independent and not politically motivated, and it bears no ties to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
EFCC Spokesperson Dele Oyewale made this statement on Friday in Abuja.
The commission previously declared Achimugu, 51, from Ofu Local Government Area in Kogi, wanted for alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering.
In response to various claims, Oyewale underscored that the investigation into Achimugu is devoid of any connection to political figures.
“She is being investigated for alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering and has since been declared wanted by the commission,” he stated.
Oyewale noted that the EFCC initiated its investigation into Achimugu in 2022.
“Despite her attempts to obtain a court injunction to block the commission from arresting, investigating, or detaining her, the injunction was challenged and subsequently vacated on Feb. 19, 2025, by a Federal High Court in Abuja.”
“The court ruled that no court has the authority to obstruct the investigative powers of the Police, EFCC, or any agency mandated by law to investigate crimes when there is reasonable suspicion or sufficient evidence of an offense.”
“Furthermore, the court upheld the interim forfeiture order regarding assets suspected to be proceeds of crime, dismissing Achimugu’s case as lacking merit.”
“This establishes that the EFCC’s investigation into her has no direct or indirect connection to any politician or any political engagement or transaction.”
“The EFCC remains non-partisan and non-sectarian. We encourage the public to maintain confidence in the professionalism of the Commission without introducing any external factors into its operations,” Oyewale affirmed.
