Igbos are Local Economic Contributors to Ibadan’s Growth

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has praised the contributions of Oyo State residents of Igbo descent, highlighting their significant role in bolstering the state’s local economy.

The monarch expressed this appreciation on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, during a visit from the state chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide at his palace.

This acknowledgment was communicated through a statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Gbenga Ayoade, in Ibadan, the state capital, on Wednesday.

Speaking via the Agba Akin Balogun of Ibadanland, Senior Chief Rafiu Onideure, the Olubadan emphasized that the capital city will continue to recognize the economic contributions of the Igbo, not only in Ibadanland but throughout Oyo State and Nigeria.

The monarch also reaffirmed his dedication to fostering peaceful coexistence among the diverse ethnic groups in the historic city.

“I urge you to maintain your business, social, and religious activities peacefully and lawfully at all times as you have done in the past for the advancement of Ibadanland,” he conveyed to the Ohanaeze delegation.

“The contributions of the Igbos to commerce, trade, and business in Ibadanland are commendable and greatly valued by all, as they play a crucial role in contributing to the local economy of Oyo State and, by extension, our nation.”

I encourage other non-indigenes in Ibadan to follow the example set by the members of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo in promoting friendship and camaraderie with Ibadan indigenes.”

In response, Tallest Innocent, the Coordinator of the group and also the special assistant to Governor Seyi Makinde for community relations, expressed his gratitude to the Olubadan and the Oba-In Council for their warm reception.

“In addition to this visit, we were at the palace to introduce the newly elected executives of the state chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide to His Imperial Majesty,” Innocent stated.

He also expressed appreciation to the monarch for his support during the peaceful process and the inclusive governance approach of the traditional institution.
