JD Vance Booed at the Kennedy Center Following Trump Takeover

The Vances were on hand to see the National Symphony Orchestra perform music by Shostakovich and Stravinsky. But as soon as they were recognized, audience members treated the second couple to an unannounced opening act that lasted more than 30 excruciating seconds.

Just a month after Donald Trump’s controversial takeover of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha experienced firsthand the public’s discontent as they faced loud, sustained booing from the audience. Oops.

The Vances attended a performance by the National Symphony Orchestra featuring works by Shostakovich and Stravinsky. However, once they were recognized, the couple was met with an unexpected and lengthy chorus of boos that lasted over 30 painfully awkward seconds.

Check out part of the incident in the clip below:

Despite the crowd’s disapproval, the Vances managed to endure the booing, waving and pretending not to hear the audience’s harsh critique of the Trump administration’s policies.

On February 12, Trump dismissed several Democratic members from the Kennedy Center’s bipartisan board of directors, subsequently appointing loyalists and taking on the role of new chairman. He also revealed a new “anti-woke” programming initiative primarily targeting productions focused on Black or queer narratives.

As a result, numerous high-profile board members resigned, including Shonda Rhimes, who was treasurer. Singer-songwriter Ben Folds also stepped down as artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, many productions, including the anticipated 2026 run of “Hamilton,” have been canceled in protest.

Speaking of “Hamilton,” Vance likely wishes he had received the courteous greeting that former Vice President Mike Pence received at a performance of the award-winning musical shortly after the 2016 election. This is probably one of the few occurrences that Mike Pence experienced that JD Vance might envy.
