Megyn Kelly has commended Bill Maher as “courageous” for accepting a recent dinner invitation from President Trump. The “Real Time” host, known for his critical stance on Trump, described the president as “gracious and measured.”
Kelly also lauded Trump for reaching out to Maher, who has been a “chief antagonist” since before Trump entered the political arena in 2016.
“I really like Bill Maher and enjoy being on his show, but he has definitely been affected by what we call TDS – Trump Derangement Syndrome,” she remarked. TDS is a term used by Trump supporters to describe what they perceive as an irrational response to Trump from critics. Kelly continued, “Once the TDS gets to you, it’s difficult to escape it.”
She further stated, “I think [Maher] is starting to emerge from that mindset. It’s quite extraordinary. I’m beginning to see him recognize the man that many of us have acknowledged for quite some time, if we can look past the TDS.”
Kelly went on to mention that Maher “might be one of the few individuals who has genuinely dealt with TDS and is now overcoming it.”
She highlighted Maher’s tendency to feature Trump supporters on “Real Time,” despite not identifying as a Republican himself.
“I believe it was a courageous act for both of them – for Trump to invite a ‘chief antagonist’ to the White House,” she said, adding that Trump deserves recognition for this move.
Kelly speculated on whether Maher might alter his approach to covering the president in the future, questioning if Maher’s newfound praise for Trump could potentially alienate some of his viewers.
“Typically, Maher has been critical of Trump. I wonder if he will begin to express more positive sentiments, and if that happens, how will his audience react?” she queried.
