A police cadet in Michigan faced a startling situation when he had to disarm a 5-year-old child wielding a loaded handgun at a residence in Battle Creek on Saturday.

According to Battle Creek police, the cadet was serving a subpoena when the young child answered the door with a large knife, as reported by WWMT. The cadet requested the child to fetch an adult, but instead, the child returned with a loaded firearm.

Backup arrived shortly after the cadet managed to disarm the child. Following this, two men and a woman were taken in for questioning at the police headquarters.

In a concerning development, five children, aged between 6 months and 8 years, were placed into the custody of Child Protective Services due to the presence of the loaded weapon and the “deplorable” living conditions in the home.

Authorities reported numerous code violations, which included unsanitary living conditions, hazardous electrical issues, absence of smoke detectors, unpermitted electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work, inoperable vehicles, and an accumulation of junk and trash.

One child was transported to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital for health concerns and later transferred to a facility in Kalamazoo.

The city of Battle Creek condemned the residence due to its poor condition, and police are pursuing charges related to weapons and child neglect through the Calhoun County Prosecutor’s Office, as stated by WXMI.
