Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has emphasized that he will take the "strongest action possible" against Russia if reports confirming the death of Australian prisoner of war, Oscar Jenkins, are validated.
The 32-year-old former Melbourne teacher was captured by Russian soldiers last year while fighting for Ukraine. Albanese stated, "We call upon Russia to immediately confirm Oscar Jenkins’ status. We remain gravely concerned." This was expressed during a press conference held today.

"We will await the facts to emerge, but if any harm has come to Oscar Jenkins, it is absolutely reprehensible, and the Australian government will take the strongest action possible," Albanese added.
Both Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong have engaged with the Russian ambassador to Australia, Alexey Pavlovsky, to seek further information following 7News’s report on unverified claims regarding Jenkins’ death.
Wong reiterated Russia’s obligations under international law, stating that all prisoners of war are entitled to humane treatment and a fair trial.
"There have been several discussions with the Russian Ambassador to Australia seeking information about Mr. Jenkins’ whereabouts," Wong informed ABC Radio today. "We have also reached out to the Ukrainian government, not just the Ambassador."

When asked about potential retaliation if the reports are confirmed, Wong stated that "all options are on the table," which may include expelling Pavlovsky and recalling Australia’s ambassador to Russia, John Geering.
Her department is currently offering consular assistance to Jenkins’ family.
"My thoughts are with Mr. Jenkins’ family," Wong expressed. "They have endured the fear and uncertainty of a loved one amidst a foreign war for many months. I understand these reports will be devastating for them, and they are in my thoughts, as well as those of many Australians."
