Recent archaeological discoveries have unveiled a magnificent private bath complex in Pompeii, shedding light on the opulence and splendor of the ancient Roman city prior to its devastation by Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, as reported on Friday.

The baths, which include hot, warm, and cold rooms, could accommodate up to 30 guests, providing a space for relaxation before entering a nearby banquet hall adorned with themes from Greek mythology.

This luxurious bathing complex is situated within a grand residence that has been unveiled over the past two years during excavations, highlighting the diverse social life of this opulent city before Vesuvius buried it under a thick layer of ash.

A central courtyard featuring a large basin adds to the grandeur of the property, believed to have belonged to one of Pompeii’s elite in its later years.

Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, stated, “This discovery underscores how Roman houses were more than private residences; they served as stages for public life and self-promotion.”

Zuchtriegel noted that the layout evokes scenes from the Roman novel “The Satyricon,” where banquets and baths prominently showcased wealth and status.

The complex, adorned with frescoes, draws inspiration from Greek aesthetics, emphasizing themes of leisure and education.

According to Zuchtriegel, “The homeowner aimed to create a spectacle, transforming their residence into a Greek-style palace and gymnasium.”

During excavations in Pompeii, the remains of over 1,000 victims have been discovered, including two bodies within the private residence featuring the bathhouse—one being a woman aged between 35-50, clutching jewelry and coins, and a younger man.

The announcement of these bodies was made last year.
