In a recent interview, Real Madrid’s star defender Antonio Rudiger shared insights on the toughest player he has faced in La Liga, surprising fans by not naming renowned forwards like Robert Lewandowski or Lamine Yamal.

Rudiger, who joined Real Madrid ahead of the 2022–23 season, has quickly become one of the most respected center-backs in world soccer. After playing a pivotal role in securing the 2023–24 La Liga title, he is now in his second full season with Los Blancos, contributing significantly as the team aims for another championship. However, when asked about the most challenging opponent to defend against, one name stood out for him.

Speaking with Qatar’s Alkass Sports, Rudiger revealed that Julián Alvarez—Atletico Madrid’s recent signing—was the player he found most difficult to face. This revelation comes as a surprise to many, especially considering that Barcelona’s Lewandowski and Yamal have combined for five goals in their last two Clásico matches against Madrid.

Alvarez’s unique combination of physicality, agility, and relentless pressure has proven to be a formidable challenge for defenders, particularly in intense matchups.

Julian Alvarez of Atletico de Madrid celebrates a goal during the UEFA Champions League 2024 25 League Round of 16 First Leg match between Real Madrid CF and Atletico de Madrid, at Santiago Bernabeu stadium on March 04, 2025, in Madrid, Spain.

Throughout the 2024–25 season, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have faced off four times in various competitions—twice in La Liga and twice in the Champions League—each side recording one victory and two draws. Alvarez has made a significant impact in these matches, scoring twice and consistently posing a threat to the Madrid defense with his movement and positioning.

Rudiger Comments on Alvarez’s Penalty Incident

A recent Champions League penalty shootout between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid ignited discussions after Julian Alvarez was accused of touching the ball twice while taking his penalty. Rudiger, who scored the decisive penalty, offered his perspective on the matter.

Typically, when a player slips during a penalty, they often touch the ball with their non-dominant foot. Alvarez, being right-footed, shoots with his right foot and the ball did touch his left. Personally, I’m not inclined to discuss refereeing decisions. The referee reviewed it with VAR and decided not to award a penalty, so I’m unsure what controversy is being debated,” the German defender explained.
