Senate President Godswill Akpabio has revealed the reasons behind his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Akpabio stated that his move to the APC is aimed at ensuring that the ruling party secures all the states in the South South region ahead of the upcoming 2027 elections.
During a meeting with Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State at his home in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio articulated his vision for the region. According to a statement from his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Anietie Ekong, he emphasized that winning these states would significantly alter the developmental trajectory of the South South.
He expressed, “Under the APC administration, many of us recognized the need to change our political strategy to effectively represent our people at the national level and influence national affairs. Therefore, my strong move to the APC was to elevate our region’s representation in the center of power.”
Akpabio further noted, “With the current political landscape, it is evident that the ruling APC is well-positioned to bring more states into its fold. This is crucial for the political future of A’Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers States, currently under PDP control, while the APC holds Edo State.”
DAILY POST reports that the APC is optimistic about claiming Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, and Akwa Ibom states in the near future, as indicated by Akpabio’s statements.
