Mikel Arteta has identified his priority transfer target ahead of the summer transfer window as Arsenal FC aims to strengthen its squad.
As the season has progressed, it has become evident that Arsenal needs more attacking options to compete effectively.
The club’s injury crisis has left Arteta without key players like Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, and Gabriel Martinelli for significant periods.
Although Martinelli has recently returned to fitness, he remains the club’s only recognized attacker, and his return comes at a critical time when the Premier League title race is nearing its conclusion.
Arteta is keen on adding attacking talent, and one of his long-term targets is Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams.
According to BILD, the Arsenal manager is looking to make the Spanish winger his marquee signing during the summer transfer window.
Following his standout performance in the Euro 2024 campaign, Williams has captured the attention of several elite clubs worldwide.
Alongside Lamine Yamal, he was one of Spain’s best players in their Euro 2024 triumph, which has drawn interest from both Arsenal and Barcelona.
While both clubs attempted to sign him last summer, Arsenal maintains interest in bringing him in. However, they will face competition from Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich this summer.
Arsenal have opened talks to sign Spanish winger
The Gunners have made the first move to sign the player after initiating dialogue with the player’s representatives.
As per the report, Williams has a release clause in his contract valued between £48 million and £67 million.
It would be a significant acquisition for the Gunners if they can secure one of the best attacking talents in the world for that amount.
Arteta is determined to prioritize the signing of an attacker as he finds himself once again on the brink of losing out in the Premier League title race, similar to the past two seasons.
The winger has scored nine goals and provided seven assists for Bilbao this season.
The Gunners are also closing in on another Spanish international star, Martin Zubimendi.
