In his farewell address on Wednesday, President Biden highlighted his administration’s achievements in job growth, gun control, and healthcare coverage. He also cautioned against a “dangerous concentration of power” among a select few wealthy individuals, implicitly criticizing Donald Trump’s cabinet choices packed with billionaires.
Biden remarked, “It will take time to feel the full impact of all we’ve done together, but the seeds are planted, and they’ll grow and bloom for decades to come,” before outlining some of his administration’s successes:
“At home, we created nearly 17 million new jobs, more than any other single administration in a single term. More people have health care than ever before, and overseas, we have strengthened NATO. Ukraine remains free, and we are ahead of our competition with China… I take great pride in what we have accomplished together with the American people,” he stated.
While wishing the incoming administration well, he expressed concerns about “some things that give me great concern, among them, a dangerous concentration of power in the hands of a very few ultra-wealthy individuals” and “the perilous consequences if their abuse of power goes unchecked.”
Biden continued, “Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America, where extreme wealth, power, and influence threaten our democracy, basic rights, freedoms, and a fair shot for everyone. We witness the repercussions throughout America, reminiscent of over a century ago when the American people rose against the robber barons and dismantled the trusts. They didn’t punish the wealthy; they merely made them adhere to the same rules as everyone else.”
He frequently referred to the Statue of Liberty as a beacon of hope and “the soul of our nation.”
More to come…
