As the March Madness approaches, fans are asking: Can St. John’s continue their remarkable season? Will Xavier secure their spot in the Big Dance?
The 2025 Big East men’s conference tournament kicks off on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden, promising thrilling matchups. With last weekend’s dramatic overtime showdown between St. John’s and Marquette, this year’s tournament is set to be must-see television.
St. John’s enters the tournament as the top seed in the Big East, boasting an impressive 18-2 record in conference play. Under the guidance of Rick Pitino, the team has clinched their first outright Big East regular season title in four decades. Although they may not achieve a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, a No. 2 seed remains a strong possibility.
The Red Storm enjoy a bye into the quarterfinals, joining No. 2 seed Creighton and No. 3 seed Connecticut, who finished the season with a 15-5 and 14-6 record in the Big East, respectively.
Another exciting quarterfinal matchup on Thursday features No. 4 seed Marquette against No. 5 seed Xavier. Currently, the top four seeds in the Big East—St. John’s, Creighton, Connecticut, and Marquette—are viewed as locks for the NCAA tournament. Conversely, Xavier is on the bubble and will need at least a win or two at Madison Square Garden to secure their postseason berth. The Musketeers are entering the Big East tournament on a high note, having won their last seven games, including a victory over Creighton on March 1.
