In a recent episode of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the host offered a humorous perspective on the pro-Russian and anti-democracy tendencies of the second Trump administration. Maher creatively envisioned patriotic posters that echoed the designs from World War II, albeit through the lens favored by authoritarian regimes opposed to the United States.
“There’s a lot of new developments happening, but one thing we’ve known about Trump for quite some time is his preference for nations we typically regard as adversaries, like Russia and Saudi Arabia, over traditional allies such as England and France,” Maher remarked as he began his comedic routine. “This isn’t a new phenomenon, but the pace of change has accelerated, especially following Trump’s recent Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy,” he continued, referencing the chaotic encounter where Trump and Vice President JD Vance confronted Zelenskyy, spreading misinformation and propagating Russian talking points.
Maher humorously pointed out that governments often use patriotic posters to rally public support, drawing parallels with World War II propaganda campaigns. “Remember those iconic slogans like ‘We can do it!’ and ‘I want you for the army’? They were designed to motivate the populace,” he explained.
Following this setup, Maher presented a series of satirical jokes, including:
- “I’m sticking with the Union: the former Soviet Union.”
- “Unlike some people, he always says ‘Thank you,’” humorously paired with an image of Trump embracing Putin.
- “Europe. Your ancestors left for a reason.”
- “Watch out for Canada, the quiet, polite neighbor you never suspect.”
- “I want you to cut dictator, some slide.”
- “Support North Korea. When has Dennis Rodman ever been wrong?”
- “Stand up to democracy.”
