As the new year begins, Bourbon Street in New Orleans bustles with partiers.
At 3:15 a.m., a white electric Ford pickup truck breaches a police barricade, driving recklessly into the crowd. The tragic incident results in 14 fatalities and dozens of injuries. After crashing, the driver exits the vehicle clad in a helmet and ballistic vest, armed with an AR-10 rifle, and opens fire on police officers, injuring two.
Meanwhile, in Las Vegas at 8:39 a.m., Matthew Livelsberger arrives at the Trump International valet area. Just seventeen seconds after arriving, he takes his own life, leading to an explosion of the Cybertruck he was in. The explosion, caused by fireworks-style mortars and gas canisters, is believed to be intentional, although investigators are still uncovering the motive. Seven individuals in the vicinity sustain minor injuries from the blast.
