OTTAWA – Canada’s newly appointed Prime Minister Mark Carney, who identifies as a ‘globalist,’ wasted no time in targeting President Donald Trump after securing his party’s leadership last week.
During his acceptance speech following the Liberal leadership victory, Carney made it clear that Canada’s tariffs against the United States will persist until the Americans “show us respect,” emphasizing that Canadians “are always ready when someone else drops the gloves.”
He further attempted to link Trump to his main challenger, stating, “Donald Trump believes he can weaken us with his strategy to divide and conquer,” while asserting that “Pierre Poilievre’s plan will leave us divided and ready to be conquered.”
“A person who worships at the altar of Donald Trump will kneel before him, not stand up to him,” he declared.
NEW CANADIAN PM BLASTS TRUMP’S 51ST STATE IDEA: ‘CRAZY’
Carney, who has held leadership roles as the governor of two central banks – in Canada and the United Kingdom – and has experience as a senior executive at Goldman Sachs, was sworn in as Canada’s 24th prime minister last Friday. This marks his first elected office.
He is anticipated to call for an election this week, aiming to solidify the Liberals’ power and secure his own seat in the House of Commons.
The Conservative opposition, currently neck-and-neck with the Liberals at 37% according to a recent Leger poll, is poised to portray Carney as someone “not connected to the common man,” as noted by Laura Kurkimaki, former deputy national campaign manager for the Conservative Party during the last federal election in 2021.
“Over the past five years, while Canadians have been reliant on food banks and facing a significant cost-of-living increase, he has not been in Canada,” Kurkimaki stated.
Critics view Carney as out of touch; during a recent leadership debate, he failed to respond when asked about the average cost of a week’s groceries.
In a recent appearance on “The Rest is Politics” podcast, Carney acknowledged that his “weakness is people will charge me as being elitist or globalist.”

“Well, that happens to be exactly what we need,” he asserted, describing himself as “a pragmatist” and “a leader in crisis.”
When questioned by Scaramucci on how he would counter claims of being “out of touch with the mainstream, common citizen in Canada,” Carney responded that he has dedicated most of his life in Canada “to serving Canadians.”
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also targeted Carney, who played hockey at Harvard and Oxford, after being photographed playing goalie in high-end sneakers.
“Trying to be a normal guy playing hockey in $2000 shoes,” Poilievre posted on X.
Kurkimaki speculated that the forthcoming federal election campaign with Carney at the helm could mirror the 2011 campaign when another “out-of-touch” Liberal leader, historian Michael Ignatieff, lost his House seat, leading his party to its worst-ever results in a general election won by the Conservatives.
Canada’s new prime minister holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard University and earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in economics at the University of Oxford.
Before becoming prime minister, Carney resided in Ottawa’s upscale Rockcliffe Park and possesses British and Irish citizenship, although he recently indicated he has begun the process of renouncing both.
Throughout his career, Carney has earned a substantial income, including $1.3 million during his tenure at England’s central bank, making him the highest-paid head of any federal reserve at that time.
However, his current net worth may remain undisclosed for a while. Prior to assuming the prime minister role, Carney placed his assets, “other than his personal real estate, into a blind trust,” a member of his team informed CBC News. Under Canadian law, public-office holders must divest their assets, such as stock options, by either selling them or having a trustee manage or sell them independently of Carney’s involvement.
Carney’s spokesperson has not responded to requests for comment from Fox News Digital.
