Chappell Roan made a powerful statement while accepting her Best New Artist Grammy Award on Sunday, demanding that record labels provide a living wage and health care to emerging artists.
The singer-songwriter of “Good Luck, Babe!” received roaring applause and standing ovations from notable figures like Taylor Swift and Benson Boone as she called on the “most powerful people in music” to support developing talent.
During her heartfelt speech, the Grammy winner shared her personal experience of being dropped by her label during the pandemic, which left her without health insurance. “It was devastating to feel so committed to my art and feel so betrayed by the system and so dehumanized to not have health insurance,” she expressed.

Continuing her passionate plea, Roan stated, “Record labels need to treat their artists as valuable employees with a livable wage and health insurance and protection. Labels, we got you, but do you got us?”
Earlier that night, she performed “Pink Pony Club,” dedicating the performance to her hometown. Roan garnered six nominations for her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, including nominations in the prestigious “Big Four” categories: album of the year, record of the year, song of the year, and best new artist.
On the red carpet, Roan reflected on her inspirations, stating that she has always admired trans individuals and aims to validate and recognize their experiences as much as possible.
