In a recent development in international politics, China has escalated its tariff on US goods to align with Trump’s tariffs, declaring this as the final adjustment. The new tariff rate imposed by China is now set at an unprecedented 125 percent. This move comes as China warns that the US risks becoming an economic “joke.”
According to a statement from the Ministry of Finance of China, which has been translated via Google, the nation asserts that any further tariffs from the US would “no longer make economic sense,” and warns that the US “will become a joke in the history of the world economy.” Initially, Trump introduced a tariff of 10 percent on China in February, which has now increased fourfold, reaching a rate of 145 percent. China has consistently retaliated with corresponding tariff hikes.
At the current tariff rate of 125 percent, China claims there is a complete lack of “market acceptance for US goods exported to China,” rendering any further increases pointless. The statement conveyed, “If the US continues to play the tariff numbers game, China will ignore it.”
Despite this, China has not dismissed the possibility of other forms of retaliation. The statement concludes with a stern warning: “If the US persists in significantly infringing on China’s interests, China will resolutely counterattack and fight to the end.” Recently, China announced it would limit the number of Hollywood films allowed for release, and has also restricted import and export rights for several US companies over the past week.
