In response to ongoing security threats, both the Ijumu and Kabba-Bunu Local Government Councils have declared the immediate closure of two Zango Cattle Markets located in their jurisdictions.

According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), these markets can be found in Iyara, Ijumu, and Odolu, Kabba.

It has been observed that after the shutdown of Zango Markets in various areas of the state due to security concerns, particularly in Kogi Central, criminal elements began to relocate to the Iyara and Odolu regions.

The Chairmen of Ijumu LGA, Alh. Haruna Ibrahim, and Kabba-Bunu LGA, Dare Zacchaeus, issued individual statements on Saturday in Lokoja, confirming that the market closures take effect immediately.

Both officials stated that Governor Ahmed Ododo tasked them with the responsibility “to eliminate criminal elements that tarnish the reputation of the LGAs and the state through acts such as kidnapping and banditry.”

Ibrahim elaborated that the closure was prompted by intelligence reports indicating that kidnappers and other criminal groups were exploiting the markets to carry out their illicit activities.

He emphasized that the markets would remain closed until further notice and mentioned that security agencies have been mobilized to enforce this directive.

“The safety of the residents of Ijumu and travelers is my top priority, and any individuals or groups undermining the government’s efforts will face severe consequences,” Ibrahim asserted.

Meanwhile, Zacchaeus explained that the closure of the Odolu Cattle Market was a result of persistent attacks by herders, bandits, and kidnappers.

He issued a stern warning to herdsmen displaced from the Zango Market in Iyara, advising them against attempting to enter Kabba-Bunu territory.

According to Zacchaeus, any such attempts will provoke strong resistance and legal action.

He further cautioned traditional leaders who lease land to unidentified herders and outsiders that they face potential dethronement and prosecution.

“Additionally, Area Chiefs who compromise security in their regions by selling property to unknown individuals will be arrested and prosecuted for facilitating terrorism,” Zacchaeus added.

“Individuals wishing to sell property in Kabba-Bunu LGA are required to obtain approval from the council, providing detailed biographical information about the prospective buyer,” he concluded.

“Failure to comply with this requirement will result in arrest and charges for aiding and abetting terrorism,” Zacchaeus warned.
