The Philadelphia Eagles shattered an NFL record that had been in place for almost 35 years with their incredible display against the Commanders in the NFC Championship.
This season, the Eagles established themselves as a dominant running team, with Saquon Barkley accumulating over 2,000 yards during the regular season and quarterback Jalen Hurts consistently overpowering defenses in short yardage scenarios. Their effective running game has become the backbone of their offensive strategy, propelling them to Super Bowl LIX following a remarkable performance in the NFC Championship against the Washington Commanders.
In a commanding victory, the Eagles triumphed over the Commanders with a score of 55-23, securing their spot in the Super Bowl for the second time in three years. Philadelphia’s dominance was evident in the trenches, where they relentlessly pounded the run game, leading to a record-breaking scoring day.
With an astounding seven rushing touchdowns against Washington, the Eagles began their scoring spree with Barkley’s initial carry of the game. The Commanders, intimidated by Hurts’ notorious Tush Push, resorted to desperate measures, attempting to jump the line repeatedly, which turned the game into a spectacle. Philadelphia’s offensive line outmatched Washington’s, contributing to the highest-scoring conference championship game in NFL history.
By amassing 55 points, the Eagles surpassed the 1991 Buffalo Bills, who previously held the record for the most points scored in a game before the Super Bowl with 51 points against the Raiders. This record has now been broken nearly 35 years later.
Eagles just broke the record for most points scored in a conference championship ever, per @pfref.
