Ecuador Re-elects President Daniel Noboa Amid Rising Crime Concerns

Daniel Noboa, the tough-on-crime firebrand president of Ecuador, has been re-elected in the recent runoff election held on Sunday.

Running under the right-wing National Democratic Action party, Noboa decisively defeated Luisa González of the leftist Citizen Revolution Movement, associated with the influential former President Rafael Correa.

According to the National Electoral Council, Noboa secured approximately 55.8% of the votes compared to González’s 44%.

Over 90% of ballots have been tabulated, as reported by The Associated Press. More than 13 million citizens were eligible to vote, and in Ecuador, voting is mandatory.

A Miami-born heir to a substantial banana trade fortune, Noboa emerged as an unexpected victor in the 16-month presidency following a snap election in 2023 to succeed former President Guillermo Lasso.
