Elon Musk Pressured Reddit’s CEO on Content Moderation Policies

As it turns out, Musk wasn’t only using his X platform to call out content on Reddit. He was also privately messaging Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, according to people familiar with the matter.

Nearly two months ago, Elon Musk launched a public campaign against Reddit, highlighting concerns over the platform’s moderation policies.

On X, he described it as “insane” that certain subreddits were blocking links to his platform in response to allegations of him making a Nazi salute. Shortly thereafter, Musk claimed that Reddit users were calling for violence against Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) employees, stating it had “broken the law.”

It appears Musk wasn’t just vocal on X; he was also in direct communication with Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, as reported by sources close to the situation.

Following their text exchanges, Reddit imposed a 72-hour ban on the subreddit “WhitePeopleTwitter,” which had been discussing the DOGE employees, citing the “prevalence of violent content.” The specific thread Musk referenced on X was deleted, along with numerous comments that did not advocate violence or doxxing. To date, Reddit has not intervened in any moderator decisions regarding bans on X links from subreddits.

When approached for comment about the communications between Musk and Huffman, Reddit spokesperson Gina Antonini provided the following statement: “We take any report of Reddit policy violations seriously…”
