Elon Musk has captivated the world with an unusual gesture during an event celebrating Donald Trump‘s inauguration today.
At a rally in a Washington DC arena, the billionaire dramatically pounded his chest and performed a stiff-armed salute towards the crowd.
He then repeated the gesture, addressing another section of the enthusiastic audience.

Prior to the gesture, Musk expressed gratitude, stating, “Some elections are important, some are not. But this one, this one really mattered, and I just want to say thank you for making it happen.”
He added, “It is thanks to you that the future of civilization is assured.”
After posting a video of his speech online, the footage shifted to the audience during the moment of the gesture.
The South African-born billionaire has been active on X since his speech but has not commented on the gesture.
As expected, social media comments quickly speculated about the nature of the salute.
Some users compared the gesture to a Roman salute, often associated with fascism.
The Anti-Defamation League, which combats antisemitism, urged caution in interpreting the gesture.
“This is a delicate moment,” the League stated. “It’s a new day, and yet so many are on edge. Our politics are inflamed, and social media only adds to the anxiety. It seems that @elonmusk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute, but we acknowledge that people are on edge.
“In this moment, all sides should give one another a bit of grace, perhaps even the benefit of the doubt, and take a breath. This is a new beginning. Let’s hope for healing and strive for unity in the months and years ahead.”

Musk has been appointed to lead a new cost-cutting initiative in the Trump Administration, called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
He will co-lead the department alongside Trump supporter and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.
However, despite the ongoing inauguration festivities, reports suggest that Ramaswamy will depart from DOGE.
