Emmanuel Petit believes Arsenal can still secure the Premier League title this season, despite currently being six points behind league leaders Liverpool.

The Gunners are positioned in second place after 22 matches, showcasing their resilience and intent in the competition.

Petit has outlined three key reasons why Arsenal can triumph over Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title.

It’s been a long wait for the Gunners, as they have not clinched the Premier League title since 2004.

Currently, Liverpool has played one game less than Mikel Arteta’s side, who finished as runners-up to Manchester City in both of the last two seasons.

Former midfielder Petit remains hopeful for Arsenal’s first league title since 2004, highlighting three specific reasons that could lead them to overcome their title rivals.

During his playing days, he won the title in 1998 with Arsenal, marking a significant achievement in his three-year stay in north London.

That season, under Arsene Wenger, Arsenal managed to close a 12-point gap to Manchester United at the top of the table.

When asked if Arsenal could still clinch the title this season, Petit confidently stated to Sky Sports: “Yes – and I’ll tell you why.”

He elaborated, stating, “Liverpool and other teams are juggling multiple competitions. Arsenal have experienced injuries, but those players will return soon, bringing fresh talent to the squad. Moreover, they are almost out of the two national cups, allowing them to focus solely on the Premier League and Champions League.”

“Liverpool’s form has dipped in recent weeks, with a tendency to concede goals and a lack of confidence on the pitch,” Petit asserted.

He noted that Bukayo Saka is nearing a return, and the January transfer window is still open, allowing for potential reinforcements.

Arsenal’s elimination from the FA Cup earlier this month against Manchester United has shifted their focus entirely on the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Liverpool remains active in both domestic cups but suffered a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in their semi-final first leg.

Liverpool’s upcoming match against Championship’s bottom team, Plymouth, in the FA Cup fourth round is anticipated to bolster their chances in that competition.

Petit emphasized Saka’s expected return from injury during the crucial title run-in. He has missed the last seven matches due to a hamstring injury sustained against Crystal Palace in December.

There are also concerns for Arsenal regarding the absence of players like William Saliba, Ethan Nwaneri, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Ben White due to injuries.

Additionally, Gabriel Jesus is sidelined for the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Manchester United.

In closing, Petit noted that Liverpool’s defense has been struggling, frequently conceding goals, which has affected their confidence. So far this season, Liverpool has allowed 20 goals in 21 league matches, while Arsenal has conceded 21 goals in one fewer match.

Furthermore, Liverpool leads the league in clean sheets with nine, compared to Arsenal’s seven.
