In a significant shift in the automotive industry, sources indicate that the combustion engine version of the Chevy Blazer is set to be discontinued, transitioning to an all-electric model lineup. According to GM Authority, the traditional gas-powered Chevy Blazer will only be offered as an electric vehicle (EV) in the future. Both the Chevy Blazer EV and the gas variant have been produced at GM’s Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico, but with the gas version sunsetting after the 2025 model year, the facility is now being retooled to exclusively manufacture electric vehicles.

Chevy representative Chad Lyons stated in an email to The Verge that, “we have no portfolio changes to share and will not comment on speculation.” This highlights the ongoing transition within GM towards electric mobility, as they continue to produce both EV and internal combustion engine (ICE) models, including the Blazer mid-sized SUV and the Equinox, a smaller SUV.

Notably, the Blazer EV and Equinox EV share GM’s innovative EV platform, previously known as Ultium, and are constructed at the same Mexican plant alongside the Cadillac Optiq. Additionally, Honda’s Prologue, a rebranded version of the Blazer EV, is also manufactured there.

As reported by GM Authority, the discontinuation of the gas-powered Blazer means that Chevy will no longer offer a two-row combustion SUV in North America, although the nameplate is still utilized for a three-row SUV sold in China.

In terms of sales, Chevy recorded 52,576 Blazers sold in the US in 2024, a notable decrease from 94,599 units sold in 2020, when the redesign for the 2019 model year was introduced. Furthermore, GM has also announced the discontinuation of the Cadillac XT5 and XT6 this year, reflecting the broader trends in the automotive market towards electric cars.
