Harris English Takes Farmers Insurance Open Lead with Late-Round Birdies

“Had some really good numbers on those last three holes and sometimes you’ve just got to be aggressive when you have really good numbers. It’s nice to finish like that, some good momentum heading into tomorrow,” English said of his finish.

Harris English made a significant late surge, securing the 54-hole lead at the 2025 Farmers Insurance Open.

The third round showcased a competitive leaderboard, featuring both renowned players and rising stars. English distinguished himself with a remarkable performance, closing with three consecutive birdies to finish with a 6-under 66, placing him at 9-under overall through 54 holes. He leads Andrew Novak by a single stroke as he heads into Saturday’s final round.

“I had really good numbers on those last three holes; sometimes you need to be aggressive when you have great numbers. It’s nice to finish strong and carry some momentum into tomorrow,” English reflected on his finish.

“I know it’s going to be tough, a real grind. This course is among the hardest we face on Tour. Players will miss fairways and greens, but making those tough putts is essential to stay in the game.”

Torrey Pines South has proven to be unforgiving this week, with fierce wind gusts complicating the challenge. Only 40 players remain under par after three rounds, a scenario typical of major championships, not a January PGA Tour event.

However, English has maintained his composure throughout, capitalizing on every opportunity that came his way amidst the harsh conditions.

“I’ve played here for many years; I know where to play aggressively and when to be patient, striking a balance,” English stated.

“I picked my spots well today, and it’s rewarding to see some putts go in.”

English has a history of success at Torrey Pines, with his best finish being a T-2 in 2015, where he lost in a four-man playoff to Jason Day. He also tied for eighth in 2018. Despite five appearances at the Farmers Insurance Open since then, his best result has been a T-64, including three missed cuts.

“Winning on the PGA Tour is challenging,” the 35-year-old English admitted. “Securing a victory here would be monumental. This is one of my favorite places, and the list of past champions is impressive, so I’m thrilled to be in contention as we move forward.”

With his strong approach play and putting skills, English is leading this tournament. If he can maintain his performance in these areas, he is on track to secure his first PGA Tour win in nearly four years.
