Instagram is rolling out a significant update to its profile grids, transitioning from displaying content in squares to rectangles. This change was announced by Instagram chief Adam Mosseri in an Instagram Story, stating it would be implemented over the weekend.
In his message, Mosseri acknowledged the nostalgia associated with square photos, which have been a staple of the platform. However, he pointed out that the majority of uploaded content, including both photos and videos, tends to be vertical. “It’s a bummer to overly crop them,” he remarked, emphasizing the need for a more suitable format.
While he admits that this shift might cause some inconvenience, he believes it is a necessary transition. Mosseri expressed optimism that users will appreciate the change in the long run, as it allows for more of their photos and videos to be displayed as intended in their profiles, rather than being aggressively cropped.
This reasoning aligns with previous statements made by Mosseri when Instagram confirmed it was conducting a “limited test” of this new format.
Additionally, Instagram announced the introduction of a new feature in the Reels feed, enabling users to view videos that their friends have liked.
