Following accusations of a lack of transparency surrounding Inter Miami, coach Javier Mascherano addressed concerns regarding Lionel Messi’s fitness.
Messi’s absence from the last two Inter Miami squad lists has stirred controversy, particularly among fans eager to see the superstar back on the pitch. In light of this situation, Mascherano provided a straightforward response.
After starting in the first three matches of the season, Messi missed games against Houston Dynamo and Cavalier SC due to fatigue. When asked about fans’ frustration, Mascherano clarified,
“I’m the first one who wants Leo to play—we are stronger with him. I’m not going to shoot myself in the foot. However, there are situations that need to be managed day by day, and I have to be certain that the player, whether it’s Leo or anyone else, feels 100%. Otherwise, I won’t take an unnecessary risk.”
The coach emphasized the importance of caution at this stage of the season: “Especially at this early stage of the season, where I believe we can manage certain situations. There will come times when we have to take more risks, and we will. But we’re not going to act recklessly. I understand the frustration, but reality is what it is, and we can’t change that.”

Despite Messi’s absence in the last two games, Inter Miami has achieved impressive results in both the MLS and the CONCACAF Champions Cup. However, the uncertainty surrounding his condition has led to growing discomfort within the club.
Mascherano on Messi’s Availability Against Charlotte
Inter Miami is set to host their third MLS match on Sunday against Charlotte, leading up to the second leg against Cavalier. Once again, attention will be on whether Messi will take the field or watch from the stands, as he did last game. However, Mascherano remains hopeful for Messi’s return:
“Leo is feeling much better. We still have one more training session, and we’ll assess him. We’re optimistic that, if everything goes well, there’s a chance he will be called up,” stated the Inter Miami head coach.
While Mascherano was hesitant to confirm Messi’s participation in the upcoming game, reports indicate that the forward is expected to return after more than a week away from the pitch. According to DirecTV’s Alonso Inca, the Argentine star will be available against Charlotte.
