Is a Chiefs Super Bowl 3-Peat Exciting or Frustrating

The Super Bowl hasn’t been enjoyable to watch for most of the past decade. There’s nothing fresh about watching a Super Bowl rematch from two seasons ago.

AFC Divisional Playoffs: Houston Texans v Kansas City Chiefs

The NFL belongs to the Kansas City Chiefs, and Super Bowl LIX is officially set with a thrilling matchup featuring these legendary players.

The Chiefs are on the brink of an incredible three-peat of Super Bowl victories, which would solidify their unique place in NFL history. To achieve this historic feat, they must overcome the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans, a challenge they narrowly met two years ago in Arizona.

This matchup marks Kansas City’s fourth appearance in six years, showcasing the dominance of Patrick Mahomes. Remarkably, the worst season Mahomes has endured was merely losing in the AFC Championship Game, a testament to his extraordinary career.

As we approach the final game of the season, the team at The Skinny Post—Michael Peterson and RJ Ochoa—shares their insights on the current landscape of the NFL.

Are you more impressed or annoyed by KC’s run?

RJ:

At some point during LeBron James’ NBA Finals appearances, I realized that witnessing greatness is a unique experience.

This sentiment resonates with many sports fans, whether it’s through LeBron, Tom Brady, or Patrick Mahomes. Experiencing history firsthand is a privilege.

As a Dallas Cowboys fan, I hold no grudge against the Chiefs; in fact, I appreciate them for preventing teams I dislike, like the 49ers and Eagles, from winning titles.

My Cowboys’ chance at a three-peat was derailed by meddling management, a familiar story in sports. I find myself supporting the Chiefs as they pursue their historic run.

Michael:

As an AFC fan, the Chiefs’ back-to-back dynasties are frustrating. I enjoy witnessing history being made but it’s exhausting to see a team reach their third consecutive Super Bowl.

For most of the past decade, the Super Bowl has lacked excitement. I crave fresh talent on the big stage, rather than a rematch of previous seasons. Watching a divisional rival potentially make history as the first three-time Super Bowl champions is not something I relish.

It’s ironic that the other team is from my division, making our situation quite complicated.

Favorite head coach-team pairing from this hiring cycle?

Michael:

Let’s shift focus from teams in the Super Bowl to the new head coaching hires.

Among this year’s new coaches, I am particularly intrigued by Ben Johnson leading the Chicago Bears, who have an impressive offensive group around Caleb Williams. Previously, Matt Eberflus failed to provide adequate guidance, but Johnson has the potential to excel.

The Bears will retain key offensive players like D’Andre Swift and Cole Kmet, and if they can enhance their offensive line, they will be more competitive in 2025.

RJ:

Chicago is a solid choice, but I’m drawn to Aaron Glenn with the New York Jets.

His recent press conference showcased his potential as a culture-builder, akin to Dan Campbell. While Johnson faces high expectations in Chicago, Glenn might enjoy more patience given the current circumstances in New York.

Who is the most underrated player in Super Bowl LIX?

RJ:

While our opinions may change leading up to the game, I believe DeVonta Smith could emerge as a standout player.

The Eagles boast numerous weapons, but Smith has the chance to shine on the biggest stage.

Michael:

I’ll keep an eye on Dallas Goedert from the Eagles. Despite the spotlight on bigger names, Goedert has shown tremendous skill in the playoffs.

The Senior Bowl is this week. Any player you’ll be keeping an eye on?

Michael:

The Senior Bowl marks the unofficial start of draft season, and I’m particularly interested in Laurier quarterback Taylor Elgersma from Canada.

His participation in the Senior Bowl is noteworthy, especially for a quarterback. It would be incredible to see him excel and potentially win MVP at this event.

RJ:

I am particularly excited about Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo, who had an impressive season leading the Sun Devils to a Big 12 title.

With comparisons to players like Ray Rice, his performance in Mobile could significantly boost his draft stock.
