Washington — Republican Vice President-elect JD Vance announced on Thursday his decision to resign from his U.S. Senate seat representing Ohio at midnight, just ahead of his inauguration later this month.
In the recent 2024 US Election, President-elect Donald Trump and Vance triumphed over the Democratic duo of Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz during the November 5th voting.
Following Vance’s resignation, Ohio Republican Governor Mike DeWine will appoint a replacement for his Senate seat. This appointee will serve until a special election is conducted in November 2026, where the winner will take over the remainder of Vance’s Senate term, which concludes in January 2029.
In his resignation letter to the Ohio governor, Vance expressed that “it has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve the people of Ohio in the Senate over the past two years.”
The November elections resulted in Republicans securing a narrow majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
