Liverpool FC is gearing up for the summer transfer window, with a focus on strengthening their squad, particularly in securing a new left-back.
As Andy Robertson approaches his 30s, the club is eager to find a long-term successor. One of the standout candidates on their shortlist is Álvaro Carreras from Benfica, as reported by Jornal de Notícias.
Liverpool’s Pursuit of a New Left-Back
In addition to exploring options within the Premier League, including Antonee Robinson from Fulham and Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, Liverpool is also considering alternatives from outside England. Carreras has made a significant impression since joining Benfica and has emerged as a strong candidate for Anfield.
The 21-year-old Spanish full-back has seen a steady rise in European football. After starting his youth career at Real Madrid, he moved to Manchester United in 2020. Although he didn’t make a senior appearance for the Red Devils, he gained valuable experience through loan spells at Preston North End and Granada.
In January 2024, Benfica secured Carreras on loan with a mandatory purchase clause contingent on him participating in at least 50% of the club’s remaining matches. His impressive performances quickly led Benfica to make the move permanent, securing his services for €6 million plus an additional €3 million in potential add-ons.
Since arriving at Benfica, Carreras has been instrumental in their squad, scoring three goals and providing four assists in 33 appearances across all competitions. His ability to balance both attacking and defensive duties has attracted attention from several top European clubs, including Liverpool.

Competition for Carreras’ Signature
Reports indicate that Liverpool FC has already initiated discussions with Benfica regarding the potential signing of Carreras. However, they face stiff competition from Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain, all of whom have expressed serious interest, making the race for his signature highly competitive.
With the summer transfer window approaching, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will ramp up their pursuit and submit an official bid. If signed, Carreras could herald a new era at left-back, potentially succeeding Robertson in the years to come.
