Liverpool is currently facing a potential setback as a star player with an expiring contract has reportedly shown a preference for a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) over the Saudi Pro League (SPL).
The season has taken a dramatic turn for Liverpool, following a loss in the UEFA Champions League and a defeat against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final, jeopardizing their hopes of achieving a treble. Now, the club may encounter another significant blow, particularly regarding a key player whose contract is set to expire next season.
Jurgen Klopp recently transitioned managerial responsibilities to Arne Slot, who has initiated a rebuilding phase at Liverpool. One of the most pressing concerns for the club is the future of players whose contracts are nearing their end. Among them, Trent Alexander-Arnold seems likely to move to Real Madrid, while Mohamed Salah remains in discussions regarding a contract extension. Another crucial player, Virgil Van Dijk, is also in a similar predicament.
As reported by Sky Sport’s Sacha Tavolieri, sources close to the locker room indicate that Van Dijk is contemplating one last adventure abroad before retirement. With his contract expiring in June 2025, there is currently no agreement for him to extend his stay at Liverpool.
Since his arrival from Southampton in January 2018, Van Dijk has emerged as one of the top defenders of his generation, having finished as the Ballon d’Or runner-up in 2019, just behind Lionel Messi. Now, with 311 appearances for Liverpool, the Dutch international could be on the verge of winning the Premier League before potentially departing from Anfield.

MLS Over SPL?
With Van Dijk’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, clubs are positioned to sign him without a transfer fee, and it appears that the Saudi Pro League has made its move.
According to L’Equipe, Al Hilal has presented an initial offer exceeding €20 million net to Van Dijk. However, the Dutch defender has yet to reach a final decision, as his primary focus remains on assisting Liverpool in finishing the season strongly.
Despite the lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, Tavolieri reports that Van Dijk is inclined towards a move to MLS, largely due to his admiration for U.S. culture and the more relaxed demands of soccer outside Europe.
