Ludvig Åberg showcased his exceptional skills during the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open.
Before the tournament, Åberg expressed his admiration for San Diego, calling it his favorite place in the world. He emphasized how Torrey Pines resonates with him, describing it as a course that aligns with his playing style.
“You need to drive it well, hit it high to access some of these greens, and putt effectively, so I like my chances at Torrey,” Åberg stated.
His confidence proved well-founded, as Åberg dominated the course, finishing with an impressive 9-under 63, placing him at the top of the leaderboard after day one.
Åberg started strong on the North Course, making birdies on four of his first five holes. He also scored an eagle at the par-5 17th hole, sinking a 19-footer that curled perfectly into the hole. Although he missed a birdie opportunity for an opening 29 on the 18th with a six-footer that slid by, he quickly turned it around with another birdie on the par-4 1st hole, marking his seventh birdie in just ten holes.
After a bogey on the 2nd hole due to a misjudged tee shot, Åberg rebounded with birdies at the 5th, 7th, and 9th holes, finishing the back nine with a 3-under 33.
“I felt like I was driving the ball really well,” Åberg commented on his performance. “Golf becomes much easier when you can achieve that. Even though the North Course is a bit easier than the South, it still presents its challenges, and you have to execute your shots. I’m super happy with how we started today and the quality of golf we played.”
Åberg hit 16 of 18 greens in regulation and missed only four fairways, demonstrating remarkable precision in his second PGA Tour start of the year. The golfing community last witnessed Åberg’s talent in the inaugural TGL match on January 7, shortly after he tied for fifth at The Sentry in Maui. Now, Åberg aims for his first PGA Tour win since the 2023 RSM Classic, positioned favorably at one of his favorite venues.
