Manchester United is currently facing one of its most daunting seasons in recent history, grappling with both performance and financial challenges. Amidst recent protests, United’s minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe has finally addressed the situation, acknowledging two significant mistakes and discussing the future of head coach Ruben Amorim.
In December 2023, INEOS, under Ratcliffe’s leadership, acquired a 27% stake in Manchester United, thus becoming a minority stakeholder and taking charge of the club’s sporting operations alongside the Glazer family. Reflecting on his brief tenure, Ratcliffe recognized that the choices regarding Erik ten Hag and Dan Ashworth were missteps.
In a revealing interview with The Telegraph, Ratcliffe elaborated on Ten Hag’s exit, explaining the factors that led to his dismissal just three months after signing a contract extension: “The Erik situation is somewhat mitigating. There was considerable debate during that period. He had just won a Cup final. The fans were clearly inclined to support him and all that sort of stuff.”
Regarding Dan Ashworth, Ratcliffe pointed out a “lack of chemistry” as the main reason behind the former sporting director’s exit. “Both were errors. We can’t elaborate much more than that. This is a journey with numerous decisions, and we won’t get them all right.”

In light of the financial instability, Manchester United’s leadership made decisive moves to stabilize the club, including appointing Ruben Amorim. However, Ratcliffe’s acknowledged errors have had financial repercussions, with the departures of Ten Hag and Ashworth costing the club a total of £17.5 million. Furthermore, securing Amorim’s services — along with his coaching staff — has added an additional £11 million to the club’s financial strain.
Ratcliffe Supports Amorim Despite Challenges
Despite Manchester United’s current difficulties — including a troubling 14th position in the Premier League, the lowest in the club’s history, and an FA Cup exit — Ratcliffe has expressed unwavering support for Amorim, demonstrating confidence in the Portuguese manager’s capabilities.
“Considering the squad he has and the fact that he came in mid-season, I believe he has performed admirably,” Ratcliffe stated. “Expecting miracles overnight is unrealistic. I thought they gave a truly impressive performance (against Arsenal). They worked incredibly hard and showed immense commitment,” he added.
Ratcliffe also highlighted the injury issues that have affected the squad, noting the limited options available to Amorim: “Half of the squad is unavailable due to injuries. Among our top eight salary earners, 50% are sidelined. If you look at our top eight, only Mason Mount and Luke Shaw are fit. Rashford and Sancho are also out. Four of our top eight earners are unavailable.”
Ratcliffe concluded by commending Amorim’s coaching philosophy and leadership style, emphasizing their strong rapport. “I genuinely like Ruben. I met with him before the match, and we had a meaningful discussion post-game. He is a very insightful individual,” he remarked.
