Mark Carney, the newly elected Prime Minister of Canada and Justin Trudeau’s successor in the Liberal Party, asserted during his victory speech that the country “will not” allow Donald Trump to “succeed” in his attacks against “Canadian families, workers, and businesses.”

In a widely circulated social media clip, Carney mentioned “someone who is trying to weaken our economy,” directly referencing Trump.

“Donald Trump has unjustly imposed tariffs on our products, affecting how we build, sell, and sustain our livelihoods,” Carney stated. “He’s targeting Canadian families, workers, and businesses, and we cannot allow him to prevail. We won’t.”

Carney won the election decisively, overcoming three rivals and securing 85.9% of the vote from his party. He will be formally sworn in this week after stepping down from his position on Harvard’s Board of Overseers.

As reported by The Harvard Crimson, Carney declared, “My government will maintain tariffs until the Americans show us respect. All proceeds from these tariffs will be allocated to protect our workers.”

He also emphasized, “Canada will never be part of America, in any way, shape, or form.”

If Carney’s coalition succeeds, Canada is expected to hold a general election by October 2025, although he has the option to call for an election sooner.

The recent party election signifies the end of an era that commenced with Justin Trudeau’s election in 2015, the eldest son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.

Justin Trudeau shared on X, “I leave as leader of the Liberal Party with a steadfast belief in hope and hard work. Hope for this party and this country, fueled by the millions of Canadians who demonstrate every day that improvement is always achievable.”

Trudeau had previously announced his resignation on January 6, 2025, stating, “I intend to resign as party leader and prime minister following the election of my successor through a comprehensive, national process.” He added, “This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and I recognize that I cannot be the best option if internal conflicts persist.”

“As you know, I’m a fighter. My dedication to Canadians has always driven me. This country and its people are paramount to me,” Trudeau expressed. “Parliament has faced paralysis for months following the longest session of a minority Parliament in Canadian history.”

“That’s why I requested a new session of parliament from the Governor General, and she has approved this request. The House will now be prorogued until March 24 over the holidays,” he continued. “I’ve also taken time to reflect and have discussed our future with my family. My career successes are largely due to their support and encouragement.”
