Meghan McCain has urged the “trolls” who have harshly criticized Rachel Zegler amid the ongoing controversy surrounding her role in the live-action remake of “Snow White” to “ease up.” McCain recalls her own past, admitting she, too, made questionable statements at 23.
In a recent post on X, McCain stated, “This may surprise some of you, given that I vociferously disagree with every public statement Rachel Zegler has made – but the girl is 23. I did and said a lot of dumb s–t when I was 23. Can we maybe ease up and let her learn that entertainers should just entertain?”
McCain’s comments come in response to the significant backlash Zegler has faced over her politically charged remarks and her critiques of the original animated Disney film.
A report from Variety revealed that in the lead-up to the release of Disney’s live-action “Snow White,” the studio had to take measures such as providing enhanced security for actress Gal Gadot, who has been an outspoken supporter of her home country amid the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. The studio also engaged a social media expert to assist Zegler and flew producer Marc Platt to meet with her regarding her political statements.
In August of the previous year, just days after her appearance at Disney’s D23 convention supporting “Snow White,” Zegler expressed her gratitude to fans on X, adding a controversial note with “And always remember, free Palestine.”
Now aged 23, Zegler has continued to share her social and political opinions, even declaring “F—k Donald Trump” on her social media accounts. Tensions between Disney and Zegler escalated in 2022 when she described the original “Snow White” as an outdated story featuring a prince who “literally stalks” the princess.
McCain is not the only one weighing in on Zegler’s situation. Recently, Jonah Platt, son of producer Marc Platt, criticized Zegler in a since-deleted Instagram comment, claiming she “hijacked” the film’s promotional efforts.
He stated, “Free speech does not mean you’re allowed to say whatever you want in your private employment without repercussions. Tens of thousands of people worked on that film, and she hijacked the conversation for her own immature desires at the risk of all the colleagues and crew and blue-collar workers who depend on that movie to be successful. Narcissism is not something to be coddled or encouraged … This is called adult responsibility and accountability. Her actions clearly hurt the film’s box office.”
