A new court date has been set for the Menendez brothers due to the Los Angeles wildfires. This significant development comes amid ongoing discussions surrounding their case.
The resentencing hearing, originally scheduled for January 30 and 31, has now been rescheduled to March 20 and 21, as announced by Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman on Friday.
The postponement is attributed to the recent wildfires, which have impacted the extensive preparations needed for the hearings, according to Hochman.
On January 3, the D.A. met with members of the Menendez family, who have been advocating for resentencing or clemency for Erik and Lyle Menendez. The brothers have served over 30 years in prison for the tragic 1989 murder of their parents.
“It was a very productive session where they shared their thoughts on the case, their experiences, and the direction they hope the case will take,” Hochman stated. “It was a very productive conversation over several hours.”
This high-profile murder case has garnered increased international attention, especially following the release of Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” which debuted last fall.
Hochman, who was sworn in last December, has taken over the case from former D.A. George Gascón, who previously advocated for the brothers, believing that the new evidence regarding the abuse they allegedly suffered at the hands of their parents should be considered a mitigating factor.
The devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, which have severely affected neighborhoods in Pacific Palisades, Altadena, and parts of Malibu, have also led to the postponement of various entertainment events, including the Critics Choice Awards. Additionally, filming on several productions, such as “Jeopardy!,” has been temporarily halted.
