Meta’s AI-generated Bots: Celebrity Profiles Misfire on Social Media

But the more than a dozen AI characters have apparently not been very popular: each has just a few thousand followers, with their posts getting just a few likes and comments.

In September 2023, Meta introduced its new AI chatbots featuring celebrity likenesses, including famous figures from Kendall Jenner to MrBeast, who lent their images to create AI characters on Instagram and Facebook. However, these celebrity-based bots were discontinued last summer after less than a year of operation. Users have recently reported finding a few other, entirely fake bot profiles still active, leading to negative reactions.

Among these characters are “Jane Austen,” a “cynical novelist and storyteller”; “Liv,” who describes herself as a “proud Black queer momma of 2 & truth-teller”; and “Carter,” who claims to offer relationship advice. Each of these profiles is marked as “AI managed by Meta” and dates back to the time of the original announcement. Despite their existence, these AI characters have not gained much traction, with each profile attracting just a few thousand followers and their posts receiving minimal engagement.

Recently, however, there has been a surge in attention towards these bot accounts. Following coverage from various outlets such as Rolling Stone and social media posts, users are now discovering these accounts, sparking confusion, frustration, and anger among the audience.
