Microsoft’s Copilot app for Windows is experiencing issues, as it is being “unintentionally uninstalled” on several Windows 11 devices due to the latest monthly Windows update. The Patch Tuesday updates that began rolling out on March 11th have resulted in Copilot being removed from the taskbar and uninstalled.
In a support document regarding the March update to Windows 11, Microsoft acknowledged, “We’re aware of an issue with the Microsoft Copilot app affecting some devices.” The company is currently working on a solution for this problem, and affected users can reinstall the Copilot app from the Microsoft Store and manually pin it to their taskbar in the meantime.
While this situation appears to be a bug stemming from the latest Windows update, some users of Windows 11 who are not interested in Copilot may actually view it as a welcomed feature. Microsoft is in the process of rolling out a native version of its Copilot for Windows app, nearly a year after it was transformed into a basic web app. This new Copilot app boasts an improved user interface (UI) and is set to include a press-to-talk hotkey, allowing users to interact with Microsoft’s AI assistant similarly to how they could with Cortana in Windows 10.
Additionally, Microsoft is preparing further updates to Copilot, which will be revealed at a special 50th anniversary event on April 4th. Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, will be present to announce new features for Copilot, amidst speculation that Microsoft is developing proprietary AI reasoning models to compete with OpenAI.
