The Chief Executive of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, has announced that the telecommunications company has submitted a proposal to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for a significant increase in service tariffs, specifically a 100 percent hike.
During an interview on Arise TV on Thursday, Toriola noted that while the proposal aims to address the rising costs in the telecommunications sector, there is uncertainty regarding the approval from the NCC due to the ongoing economic difficulties faced by consumers.
“We’ve put forward requests of approximately 100 percent tariff increases to regulators. I doubt they’re going to approve that quantum of increases because they are very, very sensitive to the current economic situation in the country,” stated Toriola.
This announcement comes amidst growing speculation of an imminent telecom service tariff hike in Nigeria this year. The Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo, recently threatened a shutdown of operations without a tariff hike.
In contrast, telecom subscribers have expressed their rejection of any proposed tariff increases.
