A nationwide search is currently underway for a group of schoolchildren who buried a time capsule back in 1985. This fascinating event marks a significant moment in Australian history.
It has been 40 years since these children won a national competition organized by Telstra, previously known as Telecom, to commemorate its 10th anniversary by burying items in a time capsule in Adelaide, South Australia.
All participants were aged 10 when they contributed items to the capsule, and they are now approaching their milestone 50th birthdays. The telco giant is eager for the nearly 50-year-olds to reunite after 40 years to rediscover the capsule and sift through a piece of Australian history.

The company has managed to locate only one member of the original group. Telstra’s regional general manager, Michael Patterson, expressed a desire for the people of Australia to assist in finding the remaining nine children.
“People move around all over the place, so we’re on the hunt to find these time capsule kids,” Patterson stated. “These are young people from different schools across Adelaide, so they may not have ever come back into contact with each other.”

Patterson mentioned that Telstra is unaware of what items are locked inside the time capsule, but he hopes it offers a fascinating glimpse into ’80s technology and pop culture.
“In that era, they had landlines and were using payphones… it wasn’t until two years later that the first mobile handset came out,” he explained. “Since then, we’ve witnessed the invention of social media and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. The technology is evolving constantly.”
Telstra plans to open the time capsule on July 1 this year. If you recognize yourself or know someone featured in the photo, you can contact timecapsule@team.telstra.com.
