Nicolle Wallace expressed uncertainty over whether Donald Trump’s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, is misinformed or intentionally misleading the public regarding tariffs.
On Tuesday’s broadcast, the MSNBC host reacted to Leavitt’s heated exchange with an Associated Press reporter, who pressed her on her understanding of tariffs after she claimed they would function as a tax credit for Americans.
Wallace remarked, “She’s either tragically uninformed or lying. There isn’t an economist in Donald Trump’s cabinet who would testify under oath to her assertion that ‘Tariffs are a tax cut for the American people.’ In fact, the reality is just the opposite.”

This exchange in the White House press room arose after Leavitt faced questions from AP reporter Josh Boak about Trump’s ongoing tariff increases.
“He’s not actually raising taxes,” Leavitt asserted. “Tariffs serve as a tax burden on foreign entities that have been exploiting us. They represent a tax cut for the American people, and the president firmly supports tax reductions. He campaigned on eliminating taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security benefits, and he expects Congress to enact these measures later this year.”
Boak followed up by inquiring if Leavitt had ever personally paid a tariff, emphasizing that “foreign companies are not charged directly; the importers incur these costs.”
“Ultimately, once we achieve fair and balanced trade—which the American public has not experienced in decades—revenues will remain here, wages will increase, and our nation will regain its wealth,” Leavitt responded. “I find it insulting that you’re questioning my understanding of economics and the decisions made by this president. I now regret allowing a question from The Associated Press.”
