The House of Representatives Orders NCC to Block Pornographic Websites in Nigeria
In a recent plenary session, Dalhatu Tafaki, a lawmaker from Katsina State, spearheaded a motion urging the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to block all pornographic websites. This action arises from increasing concerns regarding moral values and youth addiction to explicit content.
“Prominent psychologists and sociologists globally have raised alarms about the psychological and sociological impacts of engaging with pornographic material,” Tafaki asserted during the session.
He drew parallels with similar restrictions in various regions, including parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

Tafaki emphasized that the youth in Nigeria are increasingly becoming addicted to explicit materials, which could adversely affect their development.
The motion gained traction among fellow lawmakers, receiving overwhelming support in a voice vote led by the Speaker of the House.
Consequently, the lawmakers instructed the NCC to implement the ban and ensure that telecommunication providers comply with this directive.
They further called for penalties against any service providers that do not restrict access to pornographic content.

This legislative move aligns with the growing concerns about regulating digital content in Nigeria, as authorities strive to mitigate access to material deemed harmful to public morality.
However, this decision is anticipated to ignite discussions on internet censorship and the implications for individual freedoms.
As the NCC prepares to enforce this directive, there are lingering questions regarding the effectiveness of the policy implementation and potential legal or public pushback.
