Nintendo has announced a delay in the preorders for the highly anticipated Switch 2 due to concerns surrounding Donald Trump’s newly implemented tariffs. In a statement shared with The Verge by Eddie Garcia on behalf of Nintendo, the company has confirmed that preorders will no longer commence on April 9th:

Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start on April 9, 2025, in order to evaluate the potential impact of tariffs and the shifting market conditions. Nintendo will provide updates on the timing at a later date. The official launch date remains set for June 5, 2025.

Currently, there is no information on when preorders will actually begin, as Nintendo has stated it will “update timing at a later date.” The company still intends to launch the Switch 2 on June 5th.

Initially, Nintendo planned to send out invitations to eligible customers allowing them to preorder the Switch 2 directly from its website starting May 8th, but it is now uncertain when this will occur.

The Switch 2 is priced at $449.99 and boasts several enhancements, including a larger 7.9-inch 1080p display, 256GB of storage, and a C-button for in-game chats. It remains unclear whether the Switch 2 or its accessories will see price increases due to the tariffs. The Switch 2 is already notably more expensive than its $299 predecessor, with game prices ranging from $69.99 to $79.99.

Nintendo revealed the Switch 2 on the same day President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs affecting several U.S. trade partners. The repercussions of this latest round of tariffs are becoming evident, with board game manufacturer Steve Jackson Games indicating it will lead to a “seismic shift” for the industry, predicting it could be a “debacle of epic proportions for the auto industry,” and the card grading service PSA pausing submissions from outside the U.S.
