Nintendo has officially unveiled key specifications for the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 during its dedicated Switch 2 Direct presentation. The gaming console is set to launch on June 5th.

With a 7.9-inch screen, the Nintendo Switch 2 maintains a thickness of 13.99mm, similar to its predecessor. The upgraded LCD display boasts a 1080p resolution, supporting HDR and an impressive refresh rate of up to 120fps.

The redesigned Joy-Con controllers are larger and can be utilized in a manner akin to a mouse, though it is important to note that mouse functionality will only be available with compatible games. Furthermore, the controllers connect magnetically to the console.

Storage capacity has significantly increased, featuring 256GB of internal storage, a notable upgrade from the original 32GB. As highlighted in the initial reveal trailer, the Switch 2 includes two USB-C ports intended for accessory connectivity and charging.

When docked, the console allows gaming at a stunning 4K resolution with 60fps performance. The dock is also equipped with a fan designed to keep the system cool during use.

The newly introduced “C” button can activate a chat menu, providing users with quick access to features such as muting their voice during the Discord-like “GameChat” calls.

To enhance user experience, Nintendo will launch a Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour digital game on the same day as the console’s release, helping players to familiarize themselves with its features.

Notably, the game cartridges for the Switch 2 will be red, replacing the black cartridges used for the original model. Additionally, this system supports microSD Express cards, but is not compatible with original microSD cards from the first Switch.

A new Pro Controller has also been introduced, featuring rear buttons, a headphone jack, and the new C button.

Additionally, Nintendo is implementing a local game sharing feature called GameShare, allowing players to share compatible titles easily.

Nintendo initially revealed the Nintendo Switch 2 in a brief video back in January, where they stated that the console would be backward-compatible with original Switch cartridges. The video hinted at a larger device equipped with an extra port on top, along with a new connection method for Joy-Con controllers that involves snapping onto the sides, as opposed to sliding on and off. The controllers were also shown demonstrating a mouse-like sliding ability across surfaces.

In the initial announcement, Nintendo disclosed that the dock has been redesigned with a more rounded shape compared to the first edition of the Switch.
