OpenAI recently made its Super Bowl debut with a captivating 60-second advertisement that showcases AI as one of humanity’s greatest innovations.
The commercial creatively highlights humanity’s technological evolution through a unique pointillism-inspired animation style, transforming abstract dots into iconic symbols of progress—from fundamental tools like fire and the wheel to groundbreaking achievements such as DNA sequencing and space exploration. It culminates with modern AI applications, illustrating ChatGPT managing everyday tasks like drafting business plans and providing language tutoring. Notably, this ad cost approximately $14 million for its placement in the first half of the game.
Crafted under the leadership of new CMO Kate Rouch, the commercial intentionally refrains from mentioning AGI or superintelligence, concepts central to OpenAI’s mission. Instead, it emphasizes practical applications. “We want the message to resonate with the audience watching the Super Bowl, which includes tens of millions who may not be familiar with AI,” Rouch explains to The Verge, emphasizing that viewership is expected to be around 130 million people.
During the development of this commercial, OpenAI’s text-to-video AI, Sora, was utilized to quickly prototype ideas and explore various camera treatments, leading to the final production.
