Mike Ejiofor, a former Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), has called on President Bola Tinubu to unconditionally release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). In a recent statement, Ejiofor urged the Tinubu administration to consider a political solution to address the ongoing insecurity challenges in the Southeast.
During an appearance on Arise TV’s Morning Show, Ejiofor emphasized the need for prioritizing security issues in Nigeria. He expressed concern over the activities of unknown gunmen in the Southeast, who are reportedly claiming to fight for Kanu.
Ejiofor stated: “We should prioritize the issue of our security challenges. There are some that are political, while others require both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches.”
He highlighted that significant progress has been made in the Northeast, although there have been some recent isolated incidents. Ejiofor also pointed out the situation in the Northwest, mentioning the issue of Lukarawa, which has seen less activity due to effective intelligence and security operations.
In addressing the challenges in the Southeast, he urged the government to take the initiative in finding a political solution, particularly concerning the unknown gunmen and the situation surrounding Nnamdi Kanu. He stated, “I will strongly appeal to the government to use this opportunity to unconditionally release Kanu and let us see, because people who are killing innocent people are claiming to be fighting for Kanu, and he has condemned these actions.”
Ejiofor also noted that Kanu has publicly opposed the sit-at-home order, questioning how one can claim to fight for a cause while simultaneously harming the economy and livelihoods of the people.
