Fans of the popular TV show “9-1-1” were relieved to see Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) saved from her crazed kidnapper (Abigail Spencer). However, the episode concluded on a somber note as Buck (Oliver Stark) watched his best friend Eddie (Ryan Guzman) depart for Texas.

Although Guzman isn’t leaving the series permanently, as confirmed by showrunner Tim Minear, Eddie’s absence will still resonate in L.A. while he attempts to reconnect with his son Christopher (Gavin McHugh) in El Paso.

Guzman shared insights about Eddie’s journey, stating, “We will be in Texas for a bit. The end goal is to get Eddie back to the 118, but we’ll see what happens.” He expressed uncertainty regarding the timeline for Eddie’s expected return.

TheWrap recently spoke with Guzman about the expectations surrounding Eddie’s time in Texas, the impact of this move on Buck, and the challenges of reuniting Eddie and Chris in L.A.

TheWrap: It was hard to see Buck and Eddie snapping at each other about the move, but I’m glad they patched things up before Eddie left.

Ryan Guzman: Buck’s the type of person who holds people close to his heart. The 118 is definitely close to his heart, whether it be Bobby, Eddie, or Chimney. That’s his family, especially given his tumultuous relationship with his real family. Buck is dealing with a lot, especially with Maddie’s kidnapping and Eddie’s departure, which feels like a loss for him.

It did seem for a minute that this might be the end of their friendship.

Buck typically struggles to act mature in tough situations. In the last episode, he made it more about himself, but in the final moments, he realizes the importance of making amends. Now, he’s taking over Eddie’s lease and allowing his brother to mend his relationship with his child. Their dynamic fluctuates, but fundamentally, they both want the best for each other.

Buck (Oliver Stark) is heartbroken to see best friend Eddie move in Season 8 of “9-1-1” (Disney/Christopher Willard)

What will Buck be doing while Eddie is in Texas?

There’s tension on Buck’s side, which is likely to play into upcoming episodes. He’ll be settling into Eddie’s house and making it his own.

Eddie, on the other hand, is focused solely on salvaging his relationship with his son and stepping back into his parental role.

How is the relationship when he first gets to Texas with Christopher after all this time?

Through FaceTime, Eddie has had some breakthroughs with Christopher, even managing to get him to smile and engage in conversation. This progression suggests that Eddie won’t have to contend with the painful memories of Christopher’s deceased mother alone. Instead, he will work on rebuilding his relationship with his son.

And I’m sure Eddie’s butting heads with his parents.

It’s normal to butt heads with parents, especially as Eddie navigates this new chapter. His parents, now with a second chance at parenting, may want to spoil Christopher, which could lead to conflict for Eddie regarding his role as a father.

How good is Eddie going to be about staying in touch with Buck now that he’s a few states away?

They’re best friends, and like many best friends, they will stay in touch regularly. Expect to see Buck and Eddie supporting each other despite the distance.

You hadn’t actually worked with Gavin in a few months in person because of this storyline.

It’s been quite a while, and I’ve seen Gavin grow significantly during that time. He’s growing up fast, which makes me reflect on my own children and the importance of cherishing these moments.

How hard will it be to try to convince Chris to come back to L.A. with him?

In recent episodes, Christopher has started to establish his own routine, making it challenging for Eddie to uproot him again. This new reality will be Eddie’s biggest obstacle as he grapples with the desire to return to the 118 while also ensuring his son’s happiness.

“9-1-1” airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT and streams the next day on Hulu.
