Senator Ned Nwoko Defects from PDP to APC, Citing Leadership Frustrations
Senator Ned Nwoko, who serves as the representative for Delta North, has officially announced his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This significant move comes in light of the frustrations he has experienced with the PDP’s leadership in Delta State.
The announcement was made by Ms Gloria Okolugbo, the senator’s media aide, who indicated that Nwoko’s decision was largely influenced by the lack of support he faced while attempting to fulfill his campaign promises.
“Senator Nwoko came prepared to serve and deliver the dividends of good governance to the Anioma people. However, he has not enjoyed the cooperation and support of his party,” Okolugbo stated.
The Crisis within PDP in Delta State
As the sole PDP senator in Delta State, Nwoko has reportedly encountered considerable challenges in advancing his vision for Delta North.
The defection was confirmed during a consultative meeting with his constituents, further solidifying the APC’s dominance in Delta State.
“With this defection, all three Delta State senators are now in the APC,” Okolugbo noted, describing this development as a potential setback for the PDP’s influence in the state.
Nwoko’s Attempts to Restructure the PDP
Okolugbo emphasized Nwoko’s efforts to engage with the internal structures of the PDP to address ongoing issues, but stated that factionalism within the party has obstructed any meaningful progress.
“You don’t have to see violence to know there’s factionalisation in the party,” she remarked.
Nwoko’s exit represents a significant shift in Delta State’s political landscape.
“Strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring transparency in governance are critical,” Okolugbo added, reiterating Nwoko’s commitment to representative democracy and accountability.
The senator’s defection highlights the profound challenges facing the PDP in Delta State and raises important questions regarding its future in the region.
