As the countdown to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup begins, Monterrey’s star defender Sergio Ramos has shared the team’s ambitions for the prestigious tournament set to kick off in June.
The 2025 Club World Cup will showcase 32 of the world’s premier clubs, featuring global soccer icons on an unparalleled stage. In his first experience playing abroad, Ramos has expressed Monterrey’s expectations for the revamped competition.
Having competed in the globe’s most significant tournaments with Real Madrid and the Spain national team, securing over 20 major titles, this year’s expanded Club World Cup signifies a fresh chapter for the legendary defender. In an interview with FIFA’s official website, Ramos articulated his outlook on the forthcoming challenges:
“Playing in these high-stakes competitions always brings an added thrill. This one is unique due to its format, demanding an exceptional level of focus where even minor details can lead to elimination. We recognize the significant opponents we’ll face, filled with renowned players and rich histories—some from Europe and others from Argentina. Each matchup presents exciting opportunities, and I’ve always relished the chance to compete against the best clubs.”
The seasoned defender also set a pragmatic target for the tournament: “Our goal is to compete vigorously against every opponent. Ultimately, I believe that attitude, commitment, and dedication are indispensable in football. Regardless of the outcome, we aim to leave the field with a clear conscience, knowing we gave our all.”

“Our objective is to deliver a robust performance, aim to advance past the group stage, and then see what unfolds,” he concluded. Having secured four Club World Cup titles with Real Madrid, this edition will pose a unique challenge for the 39-year-old in his Monterrey colors.
Monterrey Faces Tough Group in 2025 Club World Cup
Monterrey clinched their spot in the 2025 Club World Cup by triumphing in the 2021 CONCACAF Champions Cup against Club America, reinforcing their position at the pinnacle of the federation. They are now set to showcase their prowess on the global stage.
The Mexican club has been placed in Group E, alongside Italy’s Inter Milan, Argentina’s River Plate, and Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds. Monterrey will kick off the tournament against Inter on June 17 in what is expected to be one of the most fiercely contested groups.
“There are always teams in these tournaments that can surprise, so our success will depend on our mental state and the health of the entire squad. Those factors will be critical to assess once the tournament begins,” Sergio Ramos concluded his interview.
