Sony is set to launch the Xyn headset (pronounced zin), an innovative “extended reality” device designed for creating 3D objects for films, animation, and games. This advanced headset, first teased at CES last year, will feature stunning 4K OLED displays, video passthrough capabilities, and compatibility with third-party design, modeling, and production software.
According to a video shared by Sony, users will have the convenience of flipping up the headset when not in use. However, it seems the headset will not include the ring and pointer that Sony showcased previously.
In tandem with the headset, Sony has introduced Xyn Motion Studio, a companion Windows application that supports up to 12 Mocopi sensors, which is part of its wireless motion-tracking system frequently utilized by V-Tubers and creators to control virtual avatars. This software features motion-editing tools, enabling creators to trim, merge, and adjust the timing and positioning of motions.
Additionally, Sony is developing a prototype for a “spatial capture solution” that aims to convert images of real-world objects and spaces into “photorealistic” 3D computer-generated assets, utilizing Sony’s advanced algorithms. Although it has been a year since Sony’s initial teaser, specific details about the Xyn headset capabilities remain limited, primarily revolving around viewing and interacting with 3D objects.
Sony plans to release its Xyn Motion Studio software in late March 2025, but the availability and pricing for the Xyn headset have yet to be announced.
